The Ambassador of Haiti, Louis Marie Montfort Saintil, yesterday presented Dr. Marie Thérèse Alexandre with a plaque “in recognition of her dedication, commitment and devotion to the Haitian community in Madrid and to promoting a link between the two cultures”.
“This 8th March, said the Haitian ambassador at the ceremony, has a triple significance for us at the Embassy. Firstly, to highlight the impeccable work of all women to achieve true equality. Secondly, to celebrate the twenty-fifth edition of La Francophonie in Madrid. And lastly and most especially, to award the plaque of recognition to our dear compatriot Marie Thérèse Alexandre for her contribution to the Haitian community for several years.”
“Marie Thérèse is a doctor by profession,” continued the Haitian ambassador, “and worked for several years in the public service and in the municipal service of the Madrid City Council until her retirement. But as a native Haitian, she has always supported Haitian compatriots by guiding them as far as she can, and has been active in the different community associations, such as the Association for Health Cooperation with Haiti and the Haitian-Spanish Circle, since their birth 22 years ago”.
The ambassador also highlighted the work of the laureate in a non-profit family association that has been working for 60 years to improve the living conditions and health of the population in the villages of Grand Bois in Haiti.
For her part, the laureate declared that she was “in the family”. For many years,” said Marie Thérèse Alexandre, “we have achieved tangible results. Thank you for taking my work into account. I will continue to work for many years to come, God willing, gathering experiences to share with everyone, hoping to serve as an example to all those who want to follow this initiative to help others, especially women for the day we are celebrating today”.
