The Diplomat
Cristina Fraile, current Spanish ambassador to Austria, has been elected new president of the Association of Spanish Diplomatic Women (AMDE), replacing Aurora Díaz-Rato.
AMDE saw the light in March 2019 to bring together women diplomats and now, two years later has proceeded to the renewal of its Board of Directors.
In AMDE’s Twitter account, the new Board expresses its desire to continue “working for a more equal Foreign Service and a foreign policy that has equality among its priority objectives.”
According to the data contained in the Foreign Action Strategy sent by the Government to the parliamentary groups, there are currently just over 900 diplomats in Spain, of which only a quarter are women “due to their slow and late incorporation into this profession”.
In the same document, as part of what it describes as “feminist foreign policy”, the Ministry indicates that measures will be adopted to promote the presence of women in positions of responsibility, starting with the current 26 female ambassadors, who represent 20% of the total number of heads of mission.
