In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the death of Manuel Azaña in exile, the Instituto Cervantes is presenting this evening at 7pm the first meeting in the series entitled Café Azaña, dedicated to his figure in which for four weeks the relationship of the Republican politician with the world of culture will be discussed.
This and other topics will be discussed by the participants in the first symposium: José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, politician and former Spanish Prime Minister between 2004 and 2011, and Angélica Tanarro, journalist and writer, head of Culture for El Norte de Castilla. The artistic action will be a musical performance by the cellist Pilar Ordóñez. It is significant that Azaña went from being the president of the Madrid Ateneo in 1930 to being, in 1931, head of the government, and that he eventually became president of the Republic during the years of the Civil War. Never before had Spain been governed by such a large group of intellectuals who promoted projects to reform Spanish political life, and by extension the people’s access to education and culture. The activity will be streamed on the Instituto Cervantes’ direct channel and on the Youtube channel. Booking of places for the face-to-face activity.
