At the end of January it will be 44 years since the murder of Atocha’s lawyers. Coinciding with the anniversary of the attack, the Teatro del Barrio will be hosting the world premiere of the play Atocha: El revés de la luz, which tells the terrible story from the point of view of one of the survivors, Alejandro Ruiz-Huerta, the only one of the lawyers who suffered the attack and is still alive today.
On 24 January 1977, three gunmen entered the office of the labour lawyers at Calle Atocha, 55 (Madrid), and shot at the nine people who were there, killing five of them. Lola González, Luis Ramos, Miguel Sarabia and Alejandro Ruiz-Huerta survived. This tragic event put in check the process of change in which Spain was then immersed and which led to the Transition. The immediate response of the entire population, taking to the streets to show their indignation at the attacks, in a peaceful and exemplary manner, is considered decisive for the arrival of democracy.
