Casa Asia’s Madrid headquarters (Calle Mayor, 69) will host the lecture “Jainism and Indian Society” next Thursday, June 4, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. This event is part of the Spain-India Dual Year 2026 and is the final session of the series “Thought and Religion in India”. Free admission with prior registration.
Jainism, the religion of non-violence, is a tradition that, although little known in the Spanish-speaking world, is by no means a “poor relation” of Hinduism or Buddhism.
The lecture will address its main contributions to the construction of Indian civilization: the doctrine of non-violence, philosophical pluralism, and vegetarianism. In this way, we will also delve into the social microcosm of one of the most interesting (and influential) communities on the Indian subcontinent.
The event will be led by Agustín Paniker, writer and editor. He teaches in various university master’s programs on religious phenomena, Indian society, and Asian religious traditions. He is the author of books such as “The Three Jewels,” “Indika,” “The Sikhs,” “Shitala’s Dream,” and “The Caste Society.”
