Defense Minister Margarita Robles visited the NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM) Headquarters in Northwood on Wednesday, May 20. Thirty-five Spanish personnel are currently deployed there, and in response to repeated accusations from the United States, she reiterated that Spain “is a serious, reliable, and committed ally,” a fact that the other members of the Alliance “know.”
During a meeting with the Spanish contingent, the sixth largest in Northwood, the minister highlighted the “extremely high level” of the Spanish Armed Forces, and the Navy in particular, which “exemplifies, through its work both on land and at sea, commitment, responsibility, and the highest level of preparedness in service of security, stability, and peace.”
She also cited Spain’s leadership in Standing Naval Groups as an example, which are one of the tools for achieving MARCOM’s objectives of deterrence, promoting interoperability, and developing maritime capabilities.
The minister also met with the Commander of MARCOM Headquarters, Admiral Robert G. Pedre of the British Royal Navy, to whom she emphasized that “Spain is a serious, reliable, and committed ally,” particularly regarding maritime security, and affirmed that “the availability and professionalism of the Navy are beyond question.” “The other countries of the Alliance know this,” she asserted.
NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) is NATO’s permanent maritime command responsible for conducting allied naval operations and coordinating the Alliance’s maritime activity in strategic areas of interest for Euro-Atlantic security.
Since 2020, and more intensely since the start of the war in Ukraine, it has been undergoing a constant transformation to adapt its responsibilities and structures to those of a fully operational headquarters aligned with NATO’s new force model.
During her visit, Robles attended an operational briefing on the current maritime strategic situation, NATO’s main naval activities, and the evolution of threats in the Euro-Atlantic maritime environment. The Minister was accompanied during the visit by the Secretary General for Defense Policy, Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez.
