The cultural space CentroCentro (Plaza de Cibeles, 1) presents on its 5th floor until next May 3 the exhibition Wunderkammer, by Ana Juan. Free entry.
“Wunderkammer” (chamber of wonders in German) is not a traditional cabinet of curiosities, it is the exhibition concept on which Ana Juan has been working during the last year. “Wunderkammer” is also not a retrospective exhibition of the artist. In this new project, created and produced for CentroCentro, Ana Juan goes beyond her long career as an illustrator and extends her trajectory as a reference of the current drawing.
“Wunderkammer” is an exhibition that forms a space of thought and creative process where Ana Juan confronts and configures her own universe, her own way of understanding the world. A project in which weaves its own universe, known and unknown, trying to put order in the overwhelming and chaotic reality in which we are immersed. Ana Juan offers the visitor an iconographic collection of imaginary beings and figures that relate, struggle, coexist, are transformed, with the idea that each one can generate their individual connections and stories. As in Ovid’s The Metamorphoses, each work tells a story that in turn extends its narrative to others, so that every element and individual is all and part of a global universe.
In this exhibition, Ana Juan’s work continues to focus on her usual medium of expression, drawing, the plastic language with which the artist relates and dialogues with the world. Ana Juan shows it to us in a classic way on paper to go then researching and developing new lines that lead to sculpture or animation. The exhibition is also a perfect setting to observe the depth and strength of Ana Juan’s drawing, the plastic virtuosity and expressive vibrancy of works made in the classical way that derive in contemporaneity and contemporary plastic languages.
Ana Juan was born in Valencia in 1961. She studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in that city. In 1983 he moved to Madrid, where he has lived ever since.
