Author: Halina Poświatowska.

The Instituto Polaco de Cultura presents next Thursday at 7.30 pm in the Librería Parent(h)esis in Madrid (Valencia street, 30) the book Mi sombra es mujer (My shadow is woman), which brings together, for the first time in Spanish, a selection of poetry by Halina Poświatowska, one of the most read poets in Poland, almost unknown in Spain. At the end of the event, a Spanish wine will be served. Pilar Adón and José Maria Faraldo will be present. It is a must to reserve a spot for attending the presentation on Eventbrite.

Poświatowska is considered in her country as the poet of love and death, central themes of her work, due to her heart disease, which accompanied her since childhood and caused her premature death at age thirty-two. In his work, the body -vulnerable and at the same time source of knowledge- occupies a very prominent place, while love is described with an unusual crudeness. His poems are intense, realistic and often of a sensuality surprisingly explicit for its time and for a Catholic country ruled by a communist dictatorship.

This anthology brings together sixty-one poems, a small but representative part of the author’s work, which delve into the limits of body and language, loneliness and desire, showing us a poet with an amazing capacity for introspection and observation of the reality that surrounds her.

Halina Poświatowska (1935-1967), née Myga, is one of the most representative Polish poets of her generation. Twelve years younger than Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska, her life was marked by a serious heart disease that forced her to spend long periods in hospitals and spas. In 1958, she underwent heart surgery in Philadelphia; after recovery she spent three years in the United States and completed her undergraduate studies at Smith College, Northampton. Debuted in 1956 with poems published in the Gazeta Częstochowska, and two years later appeared his first book, Hymn Bałwochwalczy (Hymn idolatrous, 1958). Dzień dzisiejszy (1963), Oda do rąk (1966) and Jeszcze jedno wspomnienie (1968), published posthumously. Author of a prose book Opowieść dla przyjaciela (1967). This is the first time her work has been translated into Spanish.
