<h6><strong>The Diplomat</strong></h6> <h4><strong>Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti received the new Spanish Ambassador, Isidro González Afonso, who presented him with the Copies of Credentials.</strong></h4> During the meeting, which took place on January 13, the Minister praised the depth of “the relations of friendship and cooperation” between Tunisia and the Kingdom of Spain, as well as “the shared history of both countries, their strong human, cultural, and economic ties, and their shared geographical location in the Mediterranean region,” according to the Tunisian newspaper ‘La Presse’. Ali Nafti also called for increased high-level visits between the two countries and expressed his desire to further strengthen existing cooperation and partnerships in various fields, including the economy, trade and investment, and cultural, academic, and sporting cooperation. The minister also highlighted the upcoming celebration in 2027 of the seventieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. For his part, the Spanish ambassador expressed his pride in representing his country to the Republic of Tunisia and conveyed Spain's willingness to continue supporting the relations of friendship, cooperation, and partnership with Tunisia and to foster bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest, both bilaterally and at the European level. Isidro González Afonso was appointed ambassador to Tunisia by the Council of Ministers on December 2nd, replacing Francisco Javier Puig, who was appointed ambassador on Special Mission to Afghanistan that same day. A member of the Diplomatic Corps since 2003, he has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in various ministerial cabinets, and abroad has been posted to the Spanish Representation to the OSCE in Vienna, the Spanish Embassy in Cyprus, the Consulate General in Jerusalem, and the Embassy in Rabat. From 2019 to the end of 2021, he served as Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean. Until now, he was Spain's ambassador to Sudan, Eritrea, and South Sudan. The former Spanish ambassador was received by Mohamed Ali Nafti on December 16th to mark the end of his mission, according to a press release from the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
