<h6><strong>The Diplomat</strong></h6> <h4><strong>The Spanish government has reaffirmed, on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, its “firm commitment to the protection of media professionals and the promotion of a free press” and its “support for those reporting from conflict zones or under pressure.”</strong></h4> “This November 2nd, the United Nations commemorates the eleventh day to end impunity for crimes against journalists,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted in a statement. “Spain reaffirms its firm commitment to the protection of media professionals and to the promotion of a free press as an essential pillar of democracy and the rule of law,” it continued. “Spain reiterates that without free journalists who can work without fear of reprisals, and without access to truthful and reliable information, there is no transparency and no genuine democracy,” the government stated. “Therefore, Spain supports international and European mechanisms for the protection of press freedom, the defense of editorial independence and the confidentiality of sources, as well as the accountability of perpetrators of attacks and crimes against journalists. Spain reaffirms its support for those reporting from conflict zones or under pressure,” it concluded.
