Instituto Cultural de México presents ‘October 12, from Mexico to Spain’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

From today and until next Thursday, October 16, will be held at the Instituto Cultural de México in Madrid (Carrera de San Jerónimo, 46) the program of activities 12 October, Mexico to Spain.

In Mexico, previously, October 12 was known as the “Day of the Race”. This term referred to the “meeting” of cultures that occurred with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America in 1492. In 2020, the Senate of the Republic unanimously approved a decree to modify the celebration and establish it as the “Pluricultural Nation Day”. This change was made to abandon the term “race” and highlight the cultural richness that has emerged from the mixing and coexistence of different peoples throughout Mexico’s history.  The new approach also aligns with the commemoration of the Indigenous Resistance Day, an approach taken by other countries in the region to honour the struggle of indigenous peoples against colonization.

The programme of events is as follows:

Today, 13 October: 18.30 hrs. Performance “I come to offer my heart…”, by Miguel Ángel Corona “El Reynito”; 19.00 hrs. Lecture “El penacho del México moderno”, by Valeria Corona; 20.00 hours. Screening of the documentary “El Penacho de Moctezuma” by Jaime Kuri.

Tomorrow, 14 October: 7 p.m. Screening of “Cabeza de Vaca”, by Nicolás Echeverría.

Wednesday, 15 October: 7 p.m. Screening of “Epitaph”, by Rubén Imaz.

Thursday, 16 October: 7 p.m. Screening of “499”, by Rodrigo Reyes.

The program has the support and collaboration of The America’s Research Network (ARENET) and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography.
