Eduardo González/Ane Barcos

The Spanish government celebrated this Monday the victory of the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in the parliamentary elections held this Sunday in Moldova.
“The result of the legislative elections in Moldova is proof of the European vocation of its society,” wrote Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on social media. “Despite the multiple interferences, the Moldovan people voted with democratic maturity and commitment to freedom,” he continued. “Moldova's prosperous future lies within Europe, and Spain will support them on this path,” he concluded. For his part, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares wrote on social media that “the Moldovan people have demonstrated their commitment to freedom and democracy.” “I celebrate this because when democracy advances in Europe, we all advance,” he asserted. “We are working to ensure that the sovereign will of the Moldovan people, expressed at the ballot box, is realized in their European integration,” he added. The parliamentary elections gave victory to the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which obtained 50% of the vote. This result guarantees it a solid majority in Parliament, with approximately 55 of the 101 seats, which will allow President Maia Sandu's party to continue advancing its pro-European agenda. The Patriotic Electoral Bloc, which favors rapprochement with Russia, came in second with just under 25% of the vote. Next came the pro-Russian Alternative Bloc, along with other parties such as the populist Our Party and the right-wing Democracy at Home. Before the elections, President Sandu had emphasized the crucial importance of these elections for Moldova's future, warning that the outcome would decide whether the country consolidated its democracy and joined the European Union, or whether Russia dragged it back into a "gray zone," making it a risk to regional stability. "The future of our country must be decided by Moldovans, not by Moscow," declared Sandu. On election day, while casting her vote in the capital, Sandu called for public participation, emphasizing that Moldova "is in danger and needs the help of each and every one of you." "You can save it today with your vote. Tomorrow it may be too late. We are a small but strong country. We are moving forward, in peace, toward a better future," the president stated with determination.
The European Union Welcomes Moldova's Path to the Bloc
The victory of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) was enthusiastically received by European Union leaders, who highlighted Moldova's commitment to democracy and its European perspective, amid growing Russian pressure and interference. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, welcomed the election result and recognized the Moldovan people's steadfast determination. “No attempt to sow fear or division could break the will of the Moldovan people. You have made your course clear: Europe. Democracy. Freedom,” von der Leyen said. She also highlighted the EU's continued commitment to Moldova, stressing that “Our door is open. We will be by your side every step of the way.” The Commission President concluded: “The future is yours.” The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, also expressed his support, stressing that the message from the Moldovan people was clear: “They have chosen democracy, reform, and a European future, despite pressure and interference from Russia.” Costa reaffirmed that the EU will support Moldova at every stage of its integration process. “The EU stands with Moldova. Every step of the way,” he asserted. For her part, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, congratulated Moldova on its historic decision, emphasizing that the Moldovan people have chosen the path of democracy and hope. “Moldova's future is in Europe!” Metsola affirmed, emphasizing that, with this election result, Moldova has chosen “the path of democracy, hope, and opportunity.”
