The Cervantes Institute and the International Association of Hispanists (AIH) signed a collaboration agreement this Monday in Santiago, Chile, for the joint organization of activities aimed at disseminating Hispanic studies.

The signing, which took place within the framework of the association’s 22nd Congress, was attended by the director of Cervantes, Luis García Montero, and the president of the AIH, Gloria Chicote. The agreement will last four years with an option to extend for another four years and establishes joint commitments to hold events aimed at professors, translators, and researchers in the field of Hispanic studies.

In addition, the signatories agree to facilitate the dissemination of these activities and will facilitate the participation of Institute members in the association’s congresses, which are held every three years.

The 22nd Congress of the International Association of Hispanists will be held in Santiago, Chile, from July 21 to 26, 2025. This meeting, in which the Instituto Cervantes collaborates, is organized by a consortium of Chilean universities coordinated by the Institute of Literature of the Universidad de los Andes and serves as a space for reflection on current debates regarding the study of Hispanic language, literature, and culture.

The first congress was held in 1962 in Oxford, England, and since then, it has been held every three years in different cities around the world, the most recent edition in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Santiago de Chile is the second South American city to host the event, following Buenos Aires in 2013. This year, organized by the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University, and the Universidad de los Andes, the event is attended by nearly 500 Hispanist scholars from 42 countries.
