Julio García

Spain has secured €42.1 million in European aid to finance initiatives aimed at deploying an efficient and sustainable Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), within the framework of the 2024 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) call for proposals, which subsidizes various initiatives to boost the development of European transport infrastructure.
Specifically, eleven business projects validated by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will receive European subsidies with the aim of promoting a sustainable transport system with smart and resilient solutions. According to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, of these eleven projects presented, five would be developed exclusively in Spain by public and private companies, while the other six are EU projects with Spanish participation.
11 projects
On the one hand, within the line related to safe and secure mobility, five projects will receive approximately €20.5 million. Of these, three will receive up to €16.6 million to finance the development of safe and secure parking areas (SPAs) in Gipuzkoa, Huesca, and Zaragoza. The other two projects address road resilience to climate change to avoid serious consequences resulting from environmental phenomena such as Danas (isolated depressions at high levels) and other natural disasters, and total €3.9 million. On the other hand, the other six projects are related to smart and interoperable mobility and will collectively reach approximately €21.6 million. Of these projects, four are dedicated to the development of smart transportation applications, worth €13.9 million. Specifically, the following actions are being funded:

ENAIRE and other Spanish organizations are participating in two European proposals for the development of air traffic management for the Single European Sky (SESAR).

Development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the Atlantic/Mediterranean Corridor.

Implementation of a system to eliminate barriers to data interoperability in intermodal rail transport.

Development of a navigation system to improve efficiency and safety through digital solutions.

Implementation and improvement of National Access Points and improved capture and input of traffic and mobility data.

Connecting Europe Facility
Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grants are awarded on a competitive basis, so the selected projects are those with the highest scores. The potential beneficiaries of these funds are institutions or companies established in any European Union country, which may apply individually or as a group, as well as certain international organizations related to the infrastructure and transport sectors.
