On Thursday 10 July at 8 p.m., as part of the cycle In scena a palazzo, the Instituto Italiano de Cultura in Madrid will receive Enrico Pieranunzi, one of Europe’s greatest jazz pianists, for his extraordinary concert Piano solo.
Enrico Pieranunzi (Rome) is a pianist, composer and arranger. He has recorded over 70 CDs under his own name, from piano solo to trio, duet to quintet, and has collaborated in concert or recording studio with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Chris Potter, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron. Multiple winner of the award for best Italian musician in the «Top Jazz» competition, organised annually by the magazine Musica Jazz (1989, 2003, 2008) and of the award for best European musician (Django d’Or, 1997), Pieranunzi has brought his music to stages all over the world, performing at the most important international festivals, from Montreal to Copenhagen, from Berlin and Madrid to Tokyo, from Rio de Janeiro to Beijing.
Since 1982, he has traveled numerous times to the United States, where he has given concerts in several cities, such as New York, Boston and San Francisco. Notably his participation in the Spoleto Festival USA 2007 (Charleston, North Carolina), which offered a complete portrait of him by presenting him in solo piano concerts, duet and trio. He is the only Italian musician in history and one of the very few Europeans who has played and recorded several times at the historic ‘Village Vanguard’ in New York with Marc Johnson and Paul Motian (Camjazz, 2010). Precisely for ‘Live at The Village Vanguard’ with Marc Johnson and Paul Motian (Camjazz, 2010) he was awarded in 2014 with the Echo Jazz Award -the German equivalent of the American Grammy- as Best International Pianist.
The prestigious American magazine Down Beat included his CD Live in Paris, in trio with Hein Van de Geyn and André Ceccarelli (Challenge), among the best CDs of the decade 2000/2010. He has composed several hundred pieces, some of which are already true standards interpreted and recorded by musicians from all over the world (‘Night bird’, ‘Don’t forget the poet’, ‘Fellini’s waltz’).
