Until next September 14, the Fundación Casa de Mexico, as official headquarters of PhotoEspaña, brings to Madrid When the light speaks, by the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide.
The images of Graciela Iturbide, Premio Princesa de Asturias de las artes 2025 and the greatest exponent of photography in Mexico, are recognized for their strength and for the depth with which they reflect the identity of the people of their environment and their culture, a work that has contributed, knowledge of traditions and customs throughout Mexico.
Curated by Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera in collaboration with Fomento Cultural Banamex, the exhibition brings together 115 works from 1972 to 2017, where she has captured images with a unique way of seeing the world and that has been interpreted by her through the lens of her camera to present the reflections of her gaze.
Iturbide is the photographer of temperance, calm, accentuated by the long duration of her series, most complemented in more than a decade, she takes her time and perseveres in the composition of the image. Graciela’s images make up a catalogue of transgressed limits and transgressed lines, but from respect, being able to assemble a harmonious and intense photographic documentalism. Graciela Iturbide’s gaze transforms everyday life into images of unsettling beauty, creating a tension that oscillates between an ever-present duality: from the real to the dreamlike and from life to death.
