Next Wednesday at 7 pm, the Instituto Francés in Madrid presents the latest novel by French author Julia Malye, Louisiana. Tickets to attend the presentation can be purchased at this link.

Come and discover the fascinating story, inspired by real events, of ninety young people sent from France to Louisiana through a haphazard journey in the 18th century. With her new book Louisiana, Julia Malye, a successful author who became an international literary phenomenon, takes the reader on an irresistible, moving and epic adventure about friendship, desire and the search for identity.

Paris, 1720. Marguerite Pancatelin, superior of the hospital of the Salpêtrière, faces a terrible decision: she must select ninety inmates and inmates in fertile age who will be embarked on the sailboat La Baleine towards the distant and inhospitable lands of Louisiana, where they will be forced to marry French settlers. Although the Salpêtrière is known for harbouring madmen or criminals, in reality it shelters mainly young people who have defied social norms. Among them are Geneviève, rebellious and charming, locked up for having helped several girls abort; Pétronille, daughter of a ruined aristocratic family, sent there for her eccentric behavior; and Charlotte, a 12-year-old orphan who has never been out of the hospital. With no say in deciding their future, they embark on a fascinating adventure by land and sea that will lead them to discover the overwhelming force of nature, the ancestral wisdom of indigenous cultures and the healing and unbreakable power of affective bonds.

Endowed with astonishing depth and emotion, Louisiana is not only a powerful tale of friendship and the search for identity by unforgettable heroines driven by a fabulous desire for love and life, but also a captivating portrait of an era and scenarios full of charm and mystery.
