In the framework of the XXVIII edition of the PHotoESPAÑA festival, it is presented at the Teatro Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid until next July 13 a personal trip of the photographer Joel Meyerowitz through the Europe of the 60s.

In 1966, at the age of 28 and shortly after leaving an advertising agency in New York to take up photography, Meyerowitz embarked on a road trip that would take him through Europe for a whole year. Travelled more than 30,000 km through 10 countries and took some 25,000 photographs. During this period, the photographer settled in Malaga for six months and befriended the Escalona family, one of the traditional Flemish families of the city. Throughout his stay in Malaga, Meyerowitz made 8,500 photographs and countless high-quality recordings of the flamenco shows he attended.

This unique experience, which resulted in an extraordinary photographic record of Spain during the Franco dictatorship, was a huge influence for Meyerowitz and had a lasting impact on his characteristic photographic style. Today, Meyerowitz is recognized as one of the most prominent photographers of his generation, who redefined how to capture and communicate reality with a camera.

Curated by Miguel López-Remiro, the present exhibition includes large-format period copies in colour and black and white; a broad sample of Meyerowitz’s travels through England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Greece and Italy; focusing on the importance of their long stay in Malaga.

Following the artistic evolution of Meyerowitz during his time in Europe, the exhibition shows portraits of local characters, unique moments captured in everyday street scenes, urban and natural landscapes, and photographs taken from inside your moving car. The exhibition also features a selection of original copies from his first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1968.

PHotoESPAÑA is an international photography festival held every year in Madrid during the months of May, June and July. The festival began in 1998 and has grown and consolidated to become a reference event for the world of visual arts. In addition to the headquarters in the capital of Spain, in the different editions has had several sub-offices such as Toledo, Aranjuez, Paris, Lisbon or Cuenca.
