Julio García

The European Commission has appointed Daniel Calleja y Crespo of Spain to the position of Head of the European Commission Representation in Spain.
According to the Commission's announcement on Wednesday, Calleja y Crespo will act as the official representative of the European Commission in Spain under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. The effective date will be determined later. "Recognized for his ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in various policy areas, Calleja y Crespo brings strategic vision and excellent communication skills to his role as the next voice of the Commission in Spain, promoting EU policies and fostering dialogue with national authorities, the media, and civil society," the Commission emphasized. Furthermore, it underscores that Calleja y Crespo "brings more than 35 years of distinguished experience in the design, implementation, and strategic leadership of EU policies." “His track record combines deep legal knowledge with strategic judgment,” he continues. “Throughout his career at the European Commission, he has held numerous senior management positions, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership and a deep understanding of EU law,” he adds. Calleja y Crespo has been Director-General of the European Commission's Legal Service since 2020, where he guided the Commission's legal strategies and ensured compliance with EU treaties and regulations. His extensive senior management experience includes previous positions as Director-General of the Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV) and the Directorate-General for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW). He also served as Chief of Staff to former European Commission Vice-President Loyola de Palacio, responsible for Transport and Energy, and to former Commissioner Marcelino Oreja, responsible for Institutional Affairs, Audiovisual Policy, and Relations with the European Parliament. The Commission maintains representations in all EU Member State capitals and regional offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich, and Wrocław. The representations are the Commission's eyes, ears, and voice on the ground in the EU Member States, interacting with national authorities, stakeholders, and citizens, and informing the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representation are appointed by the President of the European Commission and are the Commission's political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
