President of the Government Pedro Sánchez and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares have expressed their rejection of the Hungarian Parliament’s decision, at the suggestion of Prime Minister Victor Orbán, to ban Pride Day celebrations and allow the use of facial recognition technology to identify participants.

“Europe must not allow it,” the President of the Government wrote on social media.

“The rights of the LGBTI community and the freedom to demonstrate are fundamental rights of the European Union,” Albares stated via the same outlet. “Very concerned about Hungarian legislation that restrict them,” he continued. “Spain is with those who defend their right to live and love in freedom,” he concluded.

For his part, Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, warned that the European Union “is one of freedom & equality” and that “everyone should be able to be who they are, live & love freely”.

“The right to gather peacefully is a fundamental right to be championed across the European Union,” he declared. “We stand with the LGBTQI community – in Hungary & in all Member States,” he added.
