Taiwan was named “Formosa” in the 16th century when Portuguese sailors arrived and saw the island’s lush beauty. A century later, the Spaniards settled in the north of the island, leaving a mark that lasts until today, as the forts of San Salvador and Santo Domingo, as well as Cape Sandiajiao, transliteration to the Mandarin of “Cape Santiago”. In addition, recent archaeological excavations have demonstrated the depth of Spanish evangelizing work in Taiwan.
One of the main attractions of the island is its impressive nature, being able to boast nine national parks that offer tourists unmatched views. In addition, Taiwan is internationally known for its peculiar topography, highlighting its mountainous terrain, with more than 200 peaks above 3,000 meters high, making Taiwan an ideal destination for mountaineering lovers. Another added feature is the possibility of being able to cycle through the country, as the island has an extensive network of spectacular and environmentally friendly cycling routes that allow you to tour the most beautiful corners of the island.
One of the hallmarks of Taiwan is its variety and gastronomic richness, which is enhanced by its favorable climate and superior geographical location, as well as by the various cultural exchanges, which allow visitors to taste exotic dishes from all over the world. Taiwan is not only known internationally for the abundance and variety of fruits, but also for the exquisite tea produced on the island, highlighting such popular teas as Wenshang Pouchong and pearl tea with milk (bubble tea). We can’t forget the world famous night markets, a must-see to experience authentic Taiwanese life.
Another of the attractions of Taiwan is its technological potential, represented by the largest engineering project in its history, the skyscraper Taipei 101, which was the tallest building in the world until 2010. But also, Taiwan produces more than 60% of the world market for integrated circuits, more than 90% of the most advanced chips and provides 100% of the world supply of chips used in artificial intelligence. In addition, the Taiwan technology giant TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is a world leader in semiconductor production. Taiwan has thus become a global benchmark and key player in the semiconductor supply chain worldwide.
