The Diplomat

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inázio Lula da Silva, has invited the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) to take part in the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger, led by this Ibero-American country and which will be presented in the framework of the G-20 Summit, which will be held on November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro.
“The contributions and commitment of the Organization of Ibero-American States will be valuable for the operationalization of the Alliance and for the elimination of one of the greatest scourges that afflict humanity,” Lula said in a letter addressed to Mariano Jabonero, secretary general of the organization. During the Summit, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will be launched, an initiative led by Brazil that will aim to contribute to ending world hunger by the end of the decade and thus fulfill the commitment made in this regard in the 2030 Agenda. As reported by the organization in a press release, the Government of Brazil, as pro tempore president of the G20, has worked with the OEI in recent months to develop several working groups, specifically in the areas of education and culture. Between November 4 and 8, representatives and authorities in this area from G20 countries discussed in Salvador de Bahía the role of the cultural sector when facing climate change and presented national and international experiences of climate actions based on culture. On the other hand, from October 29 to November 2, the OEI played a prominent role as co-organizer in the city of Fortaleza of the fourth meeting of the G20 Education Working Group, which brought together heads of delegation and high-level educational authorities from around the world who also participated in the G20 Education Ministers' Meeting (EWG) and the UNESCO World Education Meeting (GEM). With the support of the OEI, throughout 2024, topics such as the valorization of teachers, digital content and school-community participation have been discussed in several meetings of this working group focused on education. In this last meeting in the capital of the state of Ceará, the central theme revolved around innovative financing policies and mechanisms in the field of education.
