Sánchez asks Brussels to host the European center for fighting fires in the Western Mediterranean in Mallorca

The Diplomat The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has asked the European Commission to host the new European center for fighting fires in the Western Mediterranean in Mallorca. Sánchez conveyed this request to King Felipe VI on Wednesday in Mallorca, during their traditional summer meeting at the Almudaina Royal Palace in Palma. In a press conference following the meeting, and in relation to the forest fires, Sánchez announced that he has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposing that Mallorca host the new European center for fighting fires in the Western Mediterranean. The announcement, which the Prime Minister shared with the King and the President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, involves creating this hub at the Son Sant Joan air base and would complement the work carried out in Cyprus by the other fire-fighting center planned by Brussels for the Eastern Mediterranean. The wildfires were the main topic of discussion during his meeting with the King, as explained by Pedro Sánchez. They also addressed the international situation—including the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East—as well as the situation in Latin America, where Peru's new president had just been sworn in, an event the King attended. Sánchez noted that Madrid will host the Ibero-American Summit next November, "where we expect to see many leaders from the region."
