Fadi Elhusseini becomes the second Palestinian ambassador to Spain since Sánchez’s recognition

Eduardo González The new Palestinian ambassador to Spain, Fadi Elhusseini, presented the copies of his credentials to the Director General of Protocol, Adrián Martín Couce, on Monday, July 27, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid, as reported by the Embassy. “This formal act marks the beginning of Ambassador Elhusseini’s official diplomatic duties in Spain, pending the presentation of his original credentials to His Majesty the King at the Royal Palace in Madrid,” the Embassy posted on LinkedIn. “Following the official approval by the Spanish Government to accept Elhusseini’s credentials as Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Kingdom of Spain, he becomes the second ambassador to represent Palestine in Madrid since Spain’s historic recognition of the State of Palestine in 2024,” it continued. According to the Embassy, ElHusseini “has had an extensive diplomatic career spanning almost three decades, beginning with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, which later became the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during which he carried out diplomatic missions at Palestinian embassies in Egypt, Turkey, Canada, and Hungary.” Furthermore, the new ambassador “is an academic who speaks several languages, holds a doctorate in history and international relations from the United Kingdom, and has authored several books, studies, and research projects on political affairs and international relations.” Fadi Elhusseini replaces Husni Abdel Wahed, who assumed the position of head of the Palestinian Authority Mission in Spain (as it was then called) in March 2022, replacing Musa Amer Odeh, who had left the post in July 2021 after more than fifteen years as the Palestinian representative in Madrid. Husni Abdel Wahed presented his Letters of Credence to the King on September 16, 2024, making him the first official Palestinian ambassador since the decision by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to recognize the State of Palestine on May 28 of that year.
