Queen Letizia to inaugurate Cervantes Institute Annual Meeting in Jerez on Monday

The Diplomat Queen Letizia will inaugurate the Cervantes Institute's Annual Meeting of Directors this Monday, July 27. The meeting, which will be held in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) until July 29, will bring together nearly one hundred directors of the institution. The opening ceremony will take place on July 27 at noon in the Atalaya Museums of Jerez, where the main events of the first day will be held. In addition to the Queen, the opening ceremony will be attended by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Eva Granados, and will include speeches by the Director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, and the Mayor of Jerez de la Frontera, María José García-Pelayo, as reported by the institution in a press release. The meeting's agenda includes closed-door working sessions, roundtables, and conferences focusing on topics such as the figure of José Manuel Caballero Bonald—whose birth centenary will be celebrated in 2026—the status of Spanish in different contexts, and the 1812 Constitution. In addition to Jerez, activities will take place in two other towns in the province: Rota and Cádiz. Cádiz will host an exhibition honoring the writer Fernando Quiñones (Chiclana de la Frontera, 1931 - Cádiz, 1998) at the Casa de Iberoamérica. As part of the opening program, a roundtable discussion will analyze the challenges facing the Spanish language in the European Union and international forums, in Africa, and in the post-Brexit United Kingdom. The directors of the Cervantes Institutes in Brussels and Casablanca, as well as the head of the London center, will participate. Luis García Montero will moderate. During the three-day meeting, Cervantes Institute directors will analyze the Institute's work to promote the Spanish language and culture worldwide. They will also finalize priorities and action plans for the upcoming academic year in the more than one hundred cities across 56 countries where the Cervantes Institute has a presence. Since 2005 (except in 2020 due to the pandemic), the Cervantes Institute has held annual meetings with the directors of its centers abroad and their entire management teams to discuss its strategies for the international promotion of the Spanish language and culture. This will be the first time the meeting has been held in Jerez and the fourth in Andalusia. To date, twelve autonomous communities have hosted these sessions: Andalusia, Catalonia, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Madrid, Cantabria, Extremadura, La Rioja, Galicia, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community, the Principality of Asturias, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands. Specifically, the previous Annual Meetings of Directors of the Institute were held in A Coruña (2005); León (2006); Córdoba (2007); Soria (2008); Comillas, Cantabria (2009); Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (2010); Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (2011); Salamanca (2012); Cáceres and Mérida (2013); Logroño and San Millán de la Cogolla, La Rioja (2014); Santiago de Compostela (2015); Madrid (2016); Málaga (2017); Orihuela and Alicante (2018); El Escorial, Madrid (2019); San Sebastián (2021); Granada (2022), Oviedo (2023), Barcelona (2024) and La Laguna, Canary Islands (2025).
