The Argentine ambassador assures there is no campaign against his country in Spain

The Diplomat The Argentine ambassador in Madrid, Wenceslao Bunge Saravia, has asserted that there is no “anti-Argentine campaign” in Spain and that the consulates have not registered “a single” attack against his compatriots in the country. “An anti-Argentine campaign? I find that hard to hear,” Bunge told Radio Mitre. “There are certain acts that are going viral that are deplorable, but I'll go by the facts: we have six consulates in Spain, almost a million Argentinians. Every time there is an attack on an Argentinian, the different police stations inform us of that attack. And we haven't received a single report of attacks; we don't see them on the street,” he affirmed, referring to some images on social media showing attacks against Argentinians in Spain. The ambassador also recalled watching the match with his family at an Argentine club in Spain, where there were about 2,000 fans, and later walking through the streets of Madrid wearing the Argentine national team jersey. “I went with my wife and my youngest daughter, who is seven years old and dressed in Argentine colors. She was born in Spain. I walked along Gran Vía after the match, greeting Spaniards, and they greeted me. There was the friendly rivalry of football, as it should be in any sport, and as it would have been the other way around,” added Bunge, who assured that the exchange with the Spaniards was limited to the typical banter of a final. “I left the stadium with my Argentine flag in the car, and there was the usual banter, but also the ‘well played’,” he noted. At one point, he admitted, he witnessed a confrontation between fans of the two countries, but he downplayed it because it was related to alcohol consumption. “It’s normal: if it happens in a Boca-River match, how could it not happen in a World Cup final?” he warned. For this reason, Bunge asked that “football stays on the field.” “We are two brother countries. I dream of ten finals like this. I am proud to see two brother countries in the final,” he continued. “I believe it is up to us, as representatives of our country, to focus on the facts. Spain is a very friendly country to Argentina, and Argentina is a very friendly country to Spain. We are not seeing what is being seen on social media,” he insisted. “I ask those Argentinians who have suffered attacks to come forward; we will assist them. Every time there has been an attack, we have intervened,” he declared. “The Spanish government also does not want to see these attacks” and supports the Argentine Embassy “in every case,” assured Bunge, who insisted that the two governments have “far more in common than differences.” “There is no closer relationship between two Latin American countries than between Argentina and Spain. Let's focus on the things we have in common, which are many more,” he stated.
