Eduardo González The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, held his first conversation with the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Labour's Andy Burnham, with whom he expressed his determination to “promote an agenda of progress for our countries, for Europe, and for the world.” The new British Labour leader, former Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham, accepted King Charles III's invitation to form a government on Monday. The new Prime Minister replaces fellow Labour member Keir Starmer, after receiving broad support from his party's MPs. For his part, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, congratulated his new UK counterpart, Ed Miliband. “Congratulations, Ed Miliband, on your appointment as UK Foreign Secretary,” he wrote. “We will cooperate to continue advancing a political, economic, and security agenda that fosters shared prosperity for our citizens, Europe, and the world,” he concluded. He is the brother of David Miliband, who also served as Foreign Secretary between June 2007 and June 2010. He replaces Yvette Cooper, who has been appointed Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. For his part, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, wrote to Andy Burnham to congratulate him on his appointment and to wish him “every success in the performance of his duties,” highlighting the strength of the relationship between the Governments of Gibraltar and the United Kingdom. Burnham's appointment came just one week after the signing of the UK-EU Treaty on Gibraltar and the start of its provisional application.
