Jerez to host the Cervantes Institute Directors' Annual Meeting

The Diplomat The city of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) will host the Cervantes Institute Directors' Annual Meeting from July 27-29, bringing together nearly one hundred directors of this institution, and which Queen Letizia usually attends. The opening of the Annual Meeting will take place on July 27 at noon in the Atalaya Museums of Jerez, where the main events of the first day will be held. The Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Eva Granados, will attend the event, and speeches will be given by the Director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, and the Mayor of Jerez de la Frontera, María José García-Pelayo, according to a press release from the institution. Earlier, the director of the Cervantes Institute, the mayor of Jerez, and Julia Caballero Ramis, president of the Caballero Bonald Foundation and daughter of the poet born in this Andalusian city, will provide full details of this Cervantes event at a press conference in the Gardens of the Atalaya Museum. In addition, a panel discussion with directors will begin at noon in the Auditorium Hall of the Gardens. This meeting will analyze the challenges facing the Spanish language in the European Union and international forums, in Africa, and in the post-Brexit United Kingdom, with the participation of the directors of the Cervantes Institutes in Brussels and Casablanca, as well as the head of the London center. Luis García Montero will moderate. During the three days of the event, Cervantes Institute officials will review the work the Institute carries out to promote the Spanish language and culture worldwide. Furthermore, they will finalize the priorities and action plans for the next academic year in the more than 100 cities across 56 countries where the Cervantes Institute is present. This meeting will include a colloquium on the figure of José Manuel Caballero Bonald, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. Participants will include García Montero himself; the director of the Manchester center, the writer and poet Martín López-Vega; and the writer Juan Bonilla. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 28, at 12:30 p.m. at the Caballero Bonald Foundation. Since 2005 (except in 2020 due to the pandemic), the Cervantes Institute has held annual meetings with the directors of its centers abroad and their entire management team to discuss its strategies for the international promotion of the Spanish language and culture. This will be the first time the meeting has been held in Jerez and the fourth time in Andalusia. To date, twelve autonomous communities have hosted these sessions: Andalusia, Catalonia, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Madrid, Cantabria, Extremadura, La Rioja, Galicia, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community, the Principality of Asturias, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands. Specifically, previous Annual Meetings of Directors of the Institute were held in A Coruña (2005); León (2006); Córdoba (2007); Soria (2008); Comillas, Cantabria (2009); Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (2010); Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (2011); Salamanca (2012); Cáceres and Mérida (2013); Logroño and San Millán de la Cogolla, La Rioja (2014); Santiago de Compostela (2015); Madrid (2016); and Málaga (2017). Orihuela and Alicante (2018); El Escorial, Madrid (2019); San Sebastián (2021); Granada (2022), Oviedo (2023), Barcelona (2024) and La Laguna, Canary Islands (2025).
