Carlos Cuerpo travels to Ukraine with fifty companies to support the country’s reconstruction

The Diplomat The First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, begins a two-day "institutional and economic" trip to Ukraine this Wednesday to promote investment and cooperation opportunities in sectors such as energy, rail, defense, and digitalization, and to support the country's reconstruction. According to the Ministry's agenda, Cuerpo will participate in the Statehood Day ceremony in Kyiv, presided over by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In 2021, the current Ukrainian president established by decree the celebration of Statehood Day on July 15th, commemorating the Baptism of Kyivan Rus' (the adoption of Christianity by Prince Volodymyr the Great in 988), conceived as an act of national exaltation. The aim of this celebration is to counter the Russian nationalist narrative that Kyivan Rus' and the Baptism of Volodymyr represent the "common spiritual cradle" of Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians, rather than the founding moment of the Ukrainian nation. According to Ministry sources cited by the media, Carlos Cuerpo is traveling with representatives from 47 Spanish companies and plans to promote the signing of several agreements between public and private institutions in both countries. The trip will conclude on Thursday, July 16. In addition to his participation in the Statehood Day events, Carlos Cuerpo will meet with the Ukrainian Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture, Oleksii Sobolev, participate alongside Sobolev in the establishment of the Spanish-Ukrainian Business Council, and attend the signing of private agreements. He will also inaugurate the Spain-Ukraine Business Meeting (organized by the Spanish State Secretariat for Trade, through ICEX, the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Kyiv, and the Spanish Office for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, in collaboration with the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, CEOE, and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce) and will address the media alongside Oleksii Sobolev. The day will include participation in a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Mykhailivska Square, a visit to the facilities of Ukraine's main airport, and the signing of the FIEM-LNR-ALG donation agreement. On Thursday, July 16, Carlos Cuerpo will co-chair the Joint Trade and Investment Commission with Sobolev and will meet with the Minister of Infrastructure, Oleksii Kuleba; the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal; and the Minister of Finance, Sergii Marchenko.
