Social Security adds more than 350,000 foreign members in a year, exceeding 3.4 million in June

The Diplomat Social Security has once again registered a record high in foreign members, both in terms of average and seasonally adjusted affiliation, with more than 350,163 new members compared to a year ago and a year-on-year increase of 11.31 percent, compared to the 2.8 percent increase in overall affiliation. According to data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, released this Tuesday, July 14, an average of 3,446,178 members were registered last June, representing an increase of 86,630 workers compared to the previous month and 350,163 more than a year ago. If seasonality and calendar effects are taken into account, the Spanish Social Security system now has 3,329,979 foreign members, after adding 330,754 in the last twelve months. 28.5 percent of foreign members come from European Union countries. Morocco remains the country with the most members of the Spanish Social Security system, now exceeding 422,000 contributors (422,347). It is followed by Romania (353,974), Colombia (316,460), Venezuela (239,892), Italy (223,500), China (133,098), Peru (122,633), and Ukraine (84,020). Of the 3,446,178 foreign workers registered with Social Security, nearly two million are men (1,965,796), while the number of women is approaching 1.5 million (1,480,382). The presence of female workers from other countries is increasing overall and represents 43 percent of all foreign workers. Regularization In total, the number of foreign workers registered with Social Security has increased by more than 980,000 since June 2022. In fact, 44.5 percent of the jobs created since the implementation of the labor reform correspond to foreign workers. Furthermore, according to the Ministry, although the registration of foreign workers with Social Security showed strong growth in the first half of the year, the rate of increase has been accelerating since the end of April, when the regularization process for foreign nationals was launched. As of June 30, there were already 159,097 people registered with Social Security as a result of the regularization process, the vast majority (83.4%) in the General Social Security Scheme. Furthermore, permanent contracts are the predominant type of contract among the new registrations (77.3%). Overall, foreign workers with permanent contracts represent 87.8% of the total. Correspondingly, the temporary employment rate for this group of workers has fallen to historic lows, to 12.2%, while the percentage of Spanish nationals with temporary contracts is 12.3%. Sectors By type of activity, these new registrations resulting from the regularization process are concentrated in Hospitality (38,776), Commerce (20,195), Administrative Activities (19,327), and Construction (18,310). In total, foreign workers represent 15.4 percent of the workforce and are particularly significant in certain sectors of the General Social Security Scheme. In Hospitality, they account for 31.5 percent of registered workers; in Agriculture, 28.9 percent; in Construction, 25.9 percent; in Administrative Activities, 18.6 percent; and in Transportation, 18.2 percent. Furthermore, in the Special System for Domestic Workers, they represent 45.5 percent, and in the Agricultural System, 41.7 percent. “Foreign workers support strategic sectors such as Care, Agriculture, Construction, Hospitality, Transportation, and Healthcare, and this is reflected in the sector-specific registration data,” stated Minister Elma Saiz. The growing presence of foreign workers starting businesses in highly skilled sectors, such as Telecommunications and Computer Programming, is also noteworthy. They now represent 32.7 percent of those registered in this sector. “We see their presence diversifying and growing more and more across all sectors,” the minister stated. “They are very present in high value-added sectors like Telecommunications, Programming, and Computer Science, where they already account for more than 14 percent of all those registered under the General Social Security Scheme,” she added.
