The air transport agreement between Spain and the Dominican Republic will enter into force on July 16

The Diplomat The Air Transport Agreement between Spain and the Dominican Republic, signed in January 2022 during the visit to Madrid of Dominican President Luis Abinader, will enter into force on July 16, as reported last Friday in the Official State Gazette (BOE). The agreement, signed on December 2, 2019, following consultations between the aeronautical authorities of both countries, establishes the legal framework that provides coverage for air links between the two countries, adapting it to EU regulations. The Government authorized the signing and provisional application of the agreement on January 18, 2021, coinciding with the visit to Madrid of Dominican President Luis Abinader, and the signing took place in Madrid three days later, during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), which featured the Dominican Republic as its special partner. The agreement, which will replace the Convention between Spain and the Dominican Republic on Air Transport of March 15, 1968, establishes flexible principles regarding the operational regime between the two countries, thus contributing to strengthening relations in the area of commercial transport. Each party may designate as many airlines as it wishes to operate the agreed services on the specified routes, as well as substitute a previously designated airline. With respect to capacity, the designated airlines of each party providing services on any of the routes stipulated in the technical agreement will enjoy fair and equitable equality of opportunity. Regarding the route schedule, the aeronautical authorities of both parties will be free to jointly establish, in the technical agreement, the route schedule to be operated by the designated airlines and will specify the traffic rights under which the routes may be operated. The new framework will also allow for the marketing of code-share services as established in the technical agreement reached between the aeronautical authorities. The main new features compared to the 1968 Convention include intermodal transport and environmental protection.
