Albares condemns the massive Russian bombing of Kyiv, which killed at least 13 people

Eduardo González Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares condemned on Thursday the massive bombing carried out by Russian forces against civilian targets in Kyiv, which killed at least thirteen people. “I condemn Russia’s attacks on civilian targets in Kyiv,” Albares posted on social media. “Our condolences and solidarity go out to the families of the victims and to all the people of Ukraine,” he continued. “We support Ukraine in its freedom and independence,” he concluded. Russian forces launched a wave of massive drone and missile attacks on Thursday night. In Kyiv, “damage has been reported at more than 20 locations, mostly ordinary residential buildings. An ambulance station, a scientific institute, a hotel, and businesses have also been damaged,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on social media. “So far, we know that thirteen people have sadly died as a result of this Russian attack (…) and more than 90 people have been injured,” he stated. “In total, Russia launched more than 70 missiles of various types against Ukraine tonight, almost half of them ballistic missiles, and nearly 500 attack drones, including ‘shahid’ reactive missiles,” the president reported. “The main strike was directed precisely at Kyiv. Our air defenses managed to shoot down a significant number of attack aircraft, but not all of them,” he added. “During the night, the enemy again launched a massive attack against the Kyiv region with attack drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles,” reported regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk on Telegram. For his part, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the capital was “under attack with ballistic missiles and drones,” and the head of the Kyiv Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, denounced “numerous direct attacks against residential buildings, where, unfortunately, people are being rescued from the rubble, including the deceased.” The bombing began hours after Zelenskyy warned at a press conference in Ireland that he had “very worrying information” from intelligence services about an imminent “massive Russian attack.” “Putin has been preparing this massive attack against Ukraine for some time, but it is not the first,” added the Ukrainian president, who returned to his country immediately after the press conference. “The supply of air defense equipment for Ukraine is an absolutely critical and priority issue,” Zelensky wrote on social media on Thursday. “It’s important that there are contributions to the PURL program: that’s what directly works to save lives. Each and every one of our bilateral agreements with partners for air defense really helps. I thank all the leaders who are helping,” he continued. “It’s especially important to move forward with the implementation of our agreements on anti-ballistic missile production. We have great confidence in the United States’ decision regarding the Patriots licenses,” because “that’s what can stop war and similar attacks,” he added.
