Spain condemns Iran’s attack on Bahrain and demands compliance with the agreement between Tehran and Washington

The Diplomat The Spanish government condemned Iran's attack on the Kingdom of Bahrain on Sunday and demanded that the parties involved comply with the memorandum of understanding signed by Tehran and the United States. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed to Bahrain "its solidarity in the face of this unjustified violation of international law, as well as of Bahraini sovereignty and territorial integrity," and urged the parties "to comply with the terms agreed upon in the memorandum of understanding, which offers an opportunity to de-escalate regional violence and reach a negotiated resolution to the crisis." "The Spanish government will continue to support all efforts aimed at consolidating stability, security, and peace in the region," the statement concluded. The incidents began last Thursday when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard bombed the Singapore-flagged merchant ship M/V Ever Lovely as it left the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman. According to Tehran, the ship was sailing an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first armed incident since June 17, when the memorandum of understanding was signed to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) accused Iran of “clearly violating the ceasefire” and “undermining freedom of navigation” in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and on Saturday bombed Iranian military installations on the country’s southern coast. In retaliation for this bombing, the Revolutionary Guard attacked U.S. forces stationed in Bahrain on the same Saturday. According to the Bahraini government, this drone attack constitutes “a flagrant violation of its sovereignty, a blatant threat to the security of its citizens and residents, and a clear violation of international norms and conventions that prohibit attacking civilian targets and terrorizing innocent people.”
