Albares travels to Slovakia this Monday, where he will visit the Spanish NATO contingent

The Diplomat Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares is traveling to Slovakia this Monday to participate in the country's Conference of Ambassadors and hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Juraj Blánar. He will also visit the Spanish contingent deployed with the Multinational Brigade in Slovakia (MN BDE SVK), part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence in Eastern Europe, at the Lest base. "This visit comes at a time of strengthening bilateral relations with a country with which Spain has also found complementarity and synergies in key areas such as European affairs, tourism, defense, and academic and scientific cooperation," the Ministry stated in a press release. "Bilateral relations between Spain and Slovakia are positive, as reflected in the visit of Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blánar to Spain in June 2025," it continued. On the economic front, Spanish companies have a strong presence in Slovakia, particularly in sectors like rail. Furthermore, Slovak tourism to Spain has doubled in the last two years, making Spain the fourth most popular destination for Slovak citizens. Spanish is the fourth most studied foreign language, with a growing institutional presence through a Cervantes Institute in Bratislava, three AECID lectureships, and seven bilingual sections with over 2,500 students. Conference of Ambassadors The Slovak Ambassadors' Conference features a guest of honor each year. Following Slovenia's Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon's attendance last year, this year Minister Albares will reinforce the international dimension of the event. This year's Conference will be titled: “A Global and Humanistic Foreign Policy.” The country's Ambassadors' Conference has been held in Bratislava since 1995. Last year's edition, held between May 26 and 28, brought together 67 ambassadors and marked the full consolidation of the format as a central strategic forum for Slovak diplomacy. Visit to the Lest base Following his participation in the Ambassadors' Conference, Minister Albares will travel to Lest, where Spain has led the Multinational Brigade in Slovakia (MN BDE SVK) since July 2024. This brigade is part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence in Eastern Europe. Spain has nearly 900 Army personnel deployed there.
