Sánchez celebrates Labour’s victory in Malta’s elections

The Diplomat Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez celebrated the Labour Party's victory in Saturday's snap general election in Malta, in which outgoing Prime Minister Robert Abela secured a fourth consecutive Labour win. "With a large turnout in yesterday's elections, the Maltese people said yes to social democracy," Sánchez posted on social media. "Congratulations, Robert Abela, on your victory," he continued. "We will continue working together, in the EU, to improve the lives of our citizens," the Prime Minister affirmed. "More rights, more Europe, more progress," he concluded. With a turnout of 87.4 percent, the Labour Party won by a margin of nearly 18,000 votes over the center-right Nationalist Party. Malta is the smallest and most densely populated country in the European Union, with approximately 550,000 inhabitants in just 316 square kilometers. Abela, 48, a member of parliament since 2017, son of former Maltese President George Abela (2009-2014), and prime minister since 2020, called the elections a year early, arguing that Malta “needs a government with a renewed mandate that can focus exclusively on the stability and needs of the country, given the numerous international tensions.” “Today we have written a page of history together,” he declared from the balcony of his party headquarters after his victory was confirmed. His main rival was Alex Borg of the Nationalist Party, who conceded defeat on Sunday and personally congratulated Abela on his victory.
