Ambassador Wenceslao Bunge asserts that “Spain needs Argentina much more than Argentina needs Spain”

The Diplomat The Argentine ambassador to Spain, Wenceslao Bunge, has stated that, thanks to the increase in oil production in his country amidst the global energy crisis, “Spain needs Argentina much more than Argentina needs Spain.” “I believe that Argentina should be the gateway for Spaniards to Latin America, and we, as Argentinians, see Spain as the gateway to Europe,” Bunge declared during an interview with the Argentine newspaper Clarín. “We don’t have the Strait of Hormuz in between, we don’t have the Suez Canal in between, we don’t have the Panama Canal, which runs out of water,” he continued. According to the ambassador, “there is so much interest in Argentina from so many other nations and so many other places that it’s not that Argentina needs Spain; I believe that Spain needs Argentina much more than Argentina needs Spain.” “But diversify,” he warned, “because the growth that Argentina is bringing is exponential.” “When Argentina starts producing this million barrels of oil,” estimated by the government for 2026, “all the country’s economic pillars” will change, and Argentina will no longer “depend solely on agribusiness,” he warned. “We will have oil and gas next year,” he assured. According to the latest monthly report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Argentina is already producing 870,000 barrels of oil per day, making it the second-largest crude oil producer in all of South America, second only to Brazil, which produces nearly four million barrels per day. After a sharp drop during the COVID-19 crisis, when production fell below 450,000 barrels per day, both the government and the IEA itself anticipate production of one million barrels before the end of 2026. Furthermore, the ambassador heaped praise on President Javier Milei, saying that “what he is doing for the country is spectacular.” “If I didn’t agree with the president, I wouldn’t be here, and I’m here because I want to be surrounded by people who are consistent and who also think like me,” he continued. “I respect someone who thinks differently from me but is consistent; what I don’t respect is the inconsistent, the hypocritical,” he added.
