AECID offers €24 million in grants for humanitarian action

The Diplomat The Council of Ministers authorized this past Tuesday the call for proposals from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) for grants to Non-Governmental Development Organizations (NGDOs) for humanitarian actions in 2026, with an initial budget of €15 million, expandable to a maximum of €24 million. The objective of this call is to finance humanitarian actions carried out by NGDOs for disaster prevention and preparedness, emergency response, addressing complex, chronic, and recurring crises, early recovery, and the protection of people in situations of particular vulnerability. Projects that develop the action lines of the Spanish Cooperation Master Plan 2024-2027, applicable in the field of humanitarian action, will be eligible for funding, primarily in the following sectors: health, water, sanitation and hygiene, food security and nutrition, protection and education in emergencies, disaster risk reduction, and anticipatory action. Likewise, gender-specific actions will be eligible for funding. These are defined as actions that respond to the specific needs of women, girls, and adolescents and whose main objective is to promote gender equality and women's empowerment, with a transformative and intersectional approach. The Council of Ministers' decision is part of the five calls for proposals that the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will offer in 2026, valued at more than €375 million. Three of the calls for proposals, as in previous years, are aimed at development cooperation projects, humanitarian actions, and innovation and knowledge initiatives, with a total budget of €75 million (ten million less than in the 2025 call). In addition, the main new features for 2026 include two other calls for proposals: a grant program for non-governmental development organizations to implement cooperation agreements for sustainable development and global solidarity for the period 2026-2029 (with a maximum budget of €300 million), and a grant program for advanced technical cooperation projects and actions related to memory, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution in Latin America and the Caribbean, within the framework of the Democracy Program, with a budget of €1.5 million.
