Albares applauds Zelenskyy’s ceasefire and calls on Russia to halt its attacks

Eduardo González Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has welcomed the unconditional ceasefire announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and called on Russia to also halt its attacks and take "steps to end this war." Zelenskyy announced an indefinite ceasefire on Monday, effective at midnight on Tuesday, in response to the unilateral truce declared by Russia for May 8 and 9 to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, which is celebrated on May 9. "We announce a ceasefire regime starting at 00:00 hours on the night of May 5-6," the president posted on the social network X. "President Zelenskyy's announcement of an unconditional ceasefire reflects a real commitment to peace," Albares wrote on Tuesday, also via social media. “We call on Russia to also halt its attacks, taking steps to end this war,” he added. For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense also announced a ceasefire in Ukraine on Monday for May 8 and 9. That same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Ukraine to declare its own truce. However, despite the Ukrainian ceasefire, Kyiv accused Russia of carrying out a new attack on a military complex in Zaporizhzhia early Wednesday morning, which reportedly left 28 dead. The European Union expressed its support for Zelenskyy's ceasefire proposal on Tuesday. “The EU welcomes Zelensky's ceasefire proposal,” Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kakha Kallas, stated on social media. However, she added, “Russia has not ceased its attacks since 2022 and has never respected any ceasefire.”
