Spain and the OAS agree on a mechanism to strengthen and regularize bilateral political dialogue

The Diplomat The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, signed an agreement this Friday in Madrid to strengthen regular political dialogue between Spain and the organization. During the meeting, which took place at the Ministry headquarters in the Palacio de Viana, Albares and Ramdin discussed, among other issues, the Spanish government's support for the Mission to Assist the Peace Process in Colombia, to which Spain will increase its financial contribution, and Spain's presence in electoral processes through observer missions. Albares also conveyed the need to guide joint action on security and the fight against organized crime in the region "based on shared values and principles," and discussed with Ramdin the work carried out in recent years on cybersecurity and areas where coordination will be strengthened, such as the strengthening of democratic institutions and gender equality. The minister also emphasized Spain's interest in continuing to contribute to the OAS's activities and remaining one of its main external donors. He highlighted, in this regard, Spain's contribution to the organization in the area of development cooperation, channeled through the Spanish Fund for the OAS, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year and through which more than 77 million euros have been allocated since its inception. During the meeting, Albares and Ramdin signed an agreement to establish a mechanism for regular political dialogue between Spain and the OAS. This will allow for monitoring the various areas of collaboration between the two organizations, as well as opening a permanent channel for dialogue on issues of regional and global interest.
