Spain consolidates its position as the second largest investor in Colombia

The Diplomat Spain has positioned itself as the second largest source of foreign direct investment in Colombia between 2021 and 2025, with a cumulative total of US$11.651 billion, as reported this Wednesday, April 15, at a business meeting organized in Madrid by the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE) in collaboration with ProColombia and ColCapital (Colombian Private Equity Association). The “Spain-Colombia Business Meeting: Capital, Growth and Future” was inaugurated by the CEOE's Director of Relations with Ibero-America and Permanent Secretary of CEIB, Narciso Casado; the Colombian Ambassador to Spain, Eduardo Ávila; the Director of ProColombia, Spain, Italy and Portugal, Lorena Arboleda; and the Executive Director of ColCapital, Paola García. It brought together a delegation of funds interested in connecting with Spanish investors, companies and institutions with the aim of identifying concrete investment and collaboration opportunities. “Colombia has established itself as a priority destination for Spanish investment,” Casado stated. “In just one year, we have gone from 800 to more than 1,100 Spanish companies operating in the country, reflecting confidence in its potential and economic environment,” he added. For his part, Eduardo Ávila Navarrete highlighted the strength of bilateral relations and Spain’s role as a strategic ally for the country’s economic development. The Director of ProColombia for Spain, Italy, and Portugal emphasized the positive evolution of the economic relationship between the two countries. “Colombia is a country open to foreign direct investment, with solid institutions and a regulatory framework that offers incentives to attract investment and diversify its production base. We want to be a strategic ally for Spanish companies,” she affirmed. One of the central themes of the meeting was the analysis of the role of private capital in the economic development of Colombia and Latin America, as well as its capacity to channel investment toward strategic sectors. The discussion brought together representatives from investment funds and international analysts, including Patricia Sáenz (EWA Capital), Adriana Suárez (Matterscale Ventures), Anuar Pérez (Orca Capital Partners), and Fiona Mackie (Fitch Solutions), moderated by María Andrea Villanueva (ColCapital) and Narciso Casado (CEOE). During the debate, the main investment opportunities in Colombia were addressed from different perspectives—venture capital, impact investing, and real estate—with particular attention to sectors such as technology, sustainability, infrastructure, and urban development. The criteria currently guiding investment decisions were also analyzed, with factors such as project scalability, the strength of management teams, and the use of advanced data analytics tools gaining prominence over more traditional approaches. The meeting also provided an opportunity to compare the managers' perspectives with the sector analysis and trends provided by Fitch Solutions, highlighting the importance of using data and advanced metrics to anticipate scenarios and make more informed investment decisions. Another highlight was the exchange of views on the Spanish business ecosystem, following meetings held by the Colombian delegation in Madrid, as well as the growing interest of international investors—including European ones—in Latin America. Finally, the challenges and conditions necessary to continue driving the growth of the private equity industry in the region were discussed, along with its impact on business development, job creation, and economic transformation.
