The Cervantes Institute pays tribute to Spaniards disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship

The Diplomat The Cervantes Institute will hold a tribute this coming Thursday, April 16 (12 pm), to the Spanish victims who disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship. Institutional representatives and artists will attend, and a Declaration of Recognition and Reparation will be presented to the Commission of Spaniards Disappeared in Argentina. The tribute will be hosted by presenter Xabier Fortes and will include welcoming remarks from the director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero. The document will be presented by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, following speeches by former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Tomás Labrador, a member of the H.I.J.O.S. Rosario organization. A discussion will also take place between the Human Rights Prosecutor, Dolores Delgado; the founder of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team, Luis Fondebrider; and two women who are relatives of victims. In addition, artists Ana Belén, Pedro Pastor, Juan Diego Botto (whose father disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship), and Miguel Ríos will participate with testimonies, poetry readings, and musical performances. The Commission of Relatives of Disappeared Spaniards in Argentina works to raise awareness and seek justice for Spanish victims, estimating nearly 100 direct disappearances and more than 200 cases linked to the Spanish community during the dictatorship (1976-1983). This organization pays tribute and supports judicial investigations, often in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Argentina. On March 24, the Government approved an institutional declaration on the occasion of the National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice in the Argentine Republic, paying tribute to the victims of the military dictatorship and, in particular, to the 307 Spanish citizens who disappeared or were murdered during that period. The initiative was promoted by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, in collaboration with the Ministries of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
