Spain and Botswana discuss the Spain-Africa Strategy and collaboration on renewables and infrastructure

The Diplomat The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, received the President and Foreign Minister of Botswana in Madrid, where they discussed the progress of the Spain-Africa 2025-2028 Strategy and the strengthening of bilateral relations in the areas of renewable energy and infrastructure. On Friday, Pedro Sánchez received the President of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko, at the Moncloa Palace. During the meeting, the first between the two leaders, they discussed strengthening bilateral relations in strategic areas such as the energy transition, renewable energy, and infrastructure. According to a press release from Moncloa Palace, Sánchez conveyed to Boko the importance of strengthening Spain and Europe's relations with the African continent and emphasized that the Spain-Africa 2025-2028 strategy constitutes "a key lever for developing a positive agenda, with a long-term vision and focused on shared challenges." The previous day, José Manuel Albares met with his Botswanan counterpart, Phenyo Butale, to strengthen relations between the two countries and address key issues on the bilateral and international agenda. During the meeting, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release, Albares highlighted the progress made on the Africa 2025-2028 Strategy, for which 80 percent of the proposed lines of action have already been implemented, and underscored Spain's objective of strengthening its collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), an organization headquartered in the Botswanan capital. The minister also highlighted Botswana's constructive role in the region and its commitment to democratic principles, the rule of law, and multilateralism. He underscored the potential of economic relations between Botswana and Spain, a relationship that, in his view, should be strengthened in the areas of infrastructure and renewable energy. Furthermore, he acknowledged the presence of Spanish companies in the country, particularly in sectors such as traffic management, agricultural development, and tourism.
