The Government will have “no problem” receiving Corina Machado on her visit to Spain

Eduardo González Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares assured this Wednesday that both the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and he himself will have “no problem” receiving Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado during her upcoming trip to Spain, which will take place between April 18 and 20. Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, confirmed her upcoming visit to Spain in a video shared on the social network X alongside former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. “Dear Venezuelans, here I am with our president Edmundo González. I will be able to hug you again, Edmundo, and so many Venezuelans,” Machado stated. “Yes sir, next April 18 at 6 pm to receive María Corina Machado on her visit to Madrid,” González responded. For its part, the official account of the National Campaign Command, the political platform supporting the opposition leader and González, has confirmed that Machado will arrive “in Madrid to reunite with Venezuelans at a historic event alongside the President of Venezuela, Edmundo González.” During an interview on the program ‘Las Mañanas’ on Radio Nacional de España, Albares stated that Machado is “perfectly free to come to Spain and, of course, if she requests a meeting—which at this time I have no knowledge of her having requested with me or anyone else—there is no problem in receiving her.” “I don’t control the Prime Minister’s schedule, but I’m sure that if she were to request it, the Prime Minister wouldn’t have any problem with it either,” he added. “I have spoken with her on several occasions,” he affirmed. “Unlike other political parties in Spain, we don't have our candidate in Caracas. What we want is for the people of Venezuela, in a free, democratic, peaceful, and genuinely Venezuelan way, to decide who their president will be,” he added. Senate sources have confirmed to the EFE news agency that Corina Machado will visit the Upper House and be received by its president, Pedro Rollán, on Monday, April 20. Meanwhile, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, also confirmed to the press that next week there will be an official reception at City Hall to pay tribute to the opposition leader, “recognizing all her achievements and everything she has accomplished.”
