The Cervantes Institute appoints new directors of its centers in Cairo, Frankfurt, and Sofia

Eduardo González The director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, has appointed the new directors of the centers in Cairo, Frankfurt, and Sofia: Gregorio Laso Móstoles, Marta Muñoz Aunión, and Jaime Hermida Marina, respectively. The appointments were made by Luis García Montero at the proposal of the Secretary General, Carmen Noguero, with the approval of the State Secretary for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World and President of the Board of Directors, Susana Sumelzo, and after consulting the Board of Directors, as published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on March 25 and reported this Wednesday by the Institute itself. The selection process was announced last December. The new director of the Cervantes Institute in Cairo, Gregorio Laso Móstoles, born in Madrid in 1961, holds a law degree from the Autonomous University of Madrid and is a civil servant in the Senior Corps of Civil Administrators of the State. Specializing in international relations, he has extensive experience in international information and supranational organizations. Throughout his career, he served as Press and Information Attaché at the Embassy of Spain in the Russian Federation from 1997 to 2003, Press and Information Attaché at the Embassy of Spain in China from 2004 to 2009, Press Advisor at the Embassy of Spain in the United States from 2009 to 2014, Senior Policy Advisor at the Office for the Implementation of Public Administration Reform (CORA/OPERA) of the Ministry of the Presidency from 2015 to 2016, Advisor on International Relations at the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Administration from 2016 to 2018, Chief Press, Information, and Public Diplomacy Attaché at the Embassy of Spain in Ankara, Turkey, from 2018 to 2024, and Advisor in the International Information Department of the Government Press Office from October 2023 to the present. For her part, the new director of the Cervantes Institute in Frankfurt, Marta Muñoz Aunión, was born in Seville in 1973 and holds a degree in Information Sciences from the University of Seville and a doctorate in Philology from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Since 2007, she has been a professor of Spanish and Latin American language, literature, and culture at the Institute of Romance Languages at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (Germany). A specialist in film studies, she has numerous publications focusing on the relationship between cinema, politics, and exile in totalitarian Europe, with particular attention to the work of Jewish filmmakers who fled Germany because of Nazism and went into exile and developed their careers in Spain during the Second Republic. She has also moderated and translated events with prominent Spanish writers and participated in teacher training programs. Jaime Hermida Marina, the new director of the Cervantes Institute in Sofia, was born in Madrid in 1978. He holds a law degree from the Carlos III University of Madrid and a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in European Law from the University of Liège (Belgium). He joined the diplomatic service in 2007 and, since then, has developed his professional career in various areas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Specifically, he worked at the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), was deputy director of the Human Rights Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and served as cultural attaché at the Spanish Embassies in Bulgaria, Kenya, and Jordan. In these postings, he actively participated in film festivals and numerous initiatives related to music, theater, dance, painting, and the visual arts, contributing to Spain's cultural outreach abroad.
