This book is a re-examination by Carlos Malamud on the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Argentina.
Fifty years have passed since the coup of March 24, 1976, which marked the beginning of the military dictatorship that lasted until December 10, 1983, when the democratic government of Raúl Alfonsín began. However, issues remain unresolved, such as violence, repression, whether there was a civil war or genocide, whether guerrilla terrorism can be equated with state terrorism, the number of disappeared and victims, popular activism, civilian support for the dictatorship, the impact of the Falklands War, and the end of authoritarianism. Other questions continue to be contentious: How should the coup and the subsequent government be defined? Was it a national security dictatorship, a military dictatorship, or a civilian-military dictatorship? What were the different types of violence?
The coup surprised virtually no one. It was accompanied by a messianic sentiment that sought to irreversibly change the economy, the institutional system, education, culture, and social structure, thanks to the fact that the military faced a weak and fragmented society, frustrated with the Peronist government and even, in some cases, inclined to cooperate with them. The leaders of the bloodiest dictatorship in Argentina’s history knew how to destroy everything in their path, but they were incapable of replacing it with anything new. This book deals with the coup, the dictatorship, and the pervasive violence that accompanied it.
Carlos Malamud is Professor Emeritus of American History at the UNED (National University of Distance Education) and Senior Research Fellow for Latin America at the Elcano Royal Institute. He is a corresponding member of the National Academy of History of Argentina.
The presentation will feature Marcela García, Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid; Rogelio Núñez, Senior Research Associate at the Elcano Royal Institute; and the author, Carlos Malamud.
