Spain condemns the latest executions in Iran and Tehran’s “indiscriminate attacks” on civilian targets

Eduardo González The Spanish government has "categorically" condemned the recent executions of opposition members in Iran and "the Iranian regime's indiscriminate attacks on the civilian population, homes, and strategic civilian infrastructure in the Gulf countries and the region." In a statement released on Tuesday, March 24, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the execution of three men accused of killing police officers during the January protests, announced last Thursday by the Tehran regime. These are the first executions by hanging related to the demonstrations that erupted in the country two months before the start of the war between Iran and the Israeli-American coalition. The Ministry also urged Iranian authorities "to end death sentences and executions, while reiterating its opposition to this inhumane punishment, which violates the most fundamental human rights to life and dignity." In the same statement, Spain “reiterates its condemnation of the Iranian regime’s bloody repression of its population, and especially of peaceful protesters, many of whom have been killed or executed after summary trials, or arbitrarily detained,” and again expresses “its firm condemnation of the Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against the civilian population, homes, and strategic civilian infrastructure in the Gulf countries and the region, systematically violating international law and international humanitarian law and causing unforeseeable environmental and economic consequences.” “Spain extends its condolences to the families of the deceased and its solidarity with all the victims of these attacks,” the statement continues. “Spain demands that the Iranian regime cease its attacks against the Gulf countries and the region, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Spain also calls on all parties to exercise restraint and de-escalate the conflict, whose destabilizing impact is already global,” it concludes. The three executed men were Mehdi Ghasemi, Saleh Mohammadi, and Saeed Davoudi, who were hanged in Qom, south of Tehran, after being found guilty of murdering two law enforcement officers, carrying out “operational actions” in support of Israel and the United States, and the crime of “enmity against God,” known as “moharebeh” in Iranian Islamic law. At least 1,500 people were executed in Iran in 2025, according to a tally presented last January by the organization Iran Human Rights. This is the highest number of annual executions recorded by the organization in 35 years.
