The Spanish government condemns the violence in the West Bank and the persecution of pro-Palestinian Israeli activists

The Diplomat The Spanish government on Sunday condemned the “unacceptable escalation of violence” in the West Bank since February 28 and expressed its “deep dismay and condemnation” at the deaths of Palestinian citizens in the West Bank and at the “systemic persecution and violence perpetrated against Israeli activists who defend the rights and dignity of Palestinians.” In a statement released on Sunday, March 15, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “the impunity with which violent settlers carry out their actions threatens the security and integrity of the Palestinian population, attacks their property and assets, and destroys their livelihoods, such as olive groves and business infrastructure, ultimately forcing Palestinians to flee their lands and homes.” Spain also expresses “special concern about the unacceptable attacks on places of worship,” including the attack on the Douma mosque by settlers, and warns that it will continue to condemn “all attacks against freedom of worship and those that incite hate speech on religious grounds.” “The violence in the West Bank is compounded by the military operations in Gaza that continue to claim the lives of civilians, resulting in more than 650 deaths since the ceasefire, including the death of a five-year-old girl last Thursday, the 12th, in Beit Lahia,” the statement continues. The Spanish government also rejects the latest decisions by the Israeli authorities to expand their policy of settlement expansion and control over the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, which constitute “a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law.” Finally, Spain urges the Israeli government to “put a firm end to the violence and impunity” and calls for those responsible for these actions to be brought to justice. “These violent actions jeopardize efforts to achieve peace, based on resolution 2803 and the New York Declaration, and threaten the viability of the State of Palestine, undermining the implementation of the two-state solution,” the statement concludes.
