The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, Guillaume V and Stéphanie, will pay an introductory visit to Spain on March 5 and 6, as announced this Thursday, February 26, by the State Secretariat for Communication.
“This introductory visit, following their recent accession to the throne, takes place within the framework of the friendly and cooperative relations between our two countries, as well as the ongoing efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations in all areas,” Moncloa Palace stated in a press release.
As part of the planned program, King Felipe V and Queen Letizia will host a luncheon in their honor. The Grand Duke will also be received on March 5 by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and the Speaker of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol.
Guillaume V of Luxembourg has been the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (and therefore head of state) since October 3, following the abdication of his father, Grand Duke Henri, after 25 years on the throne. At 44 years old, Guillaume V is the seventh Grand Duke of Luxembourg since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established.
The last visit by a Grand Duke of Luxembourg to Spain was made by Henri in December 2019, on the occasion of the opening session of COP-25 in Madrid. Felipe VI and Letizia paid an official visit to the Grand Duchy in November 2014, where they were received by Grand Duke Henri and by his heir and current Grand Duke, Guillaume. In May 2019, the King and Queen Emeritus attended the funeral of Grand Duke Jean in Luxembourg.
On March 12, 2025, Pedro Sánchez paid a working visit to Luxembourg, where he met with the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño, Grand Duke Henri, and his Luxembourg counterpart, Luc Frieden.
