PP asks the Government to verify if any Spaniards are affected by the repression in Iran

Eduardo González The People’s Parliamentary Group has asked the Government to verify if any Spanish citizens are "affected by the repression or at risk in Iran" and, if so, to "activate the necessary consular protection mechanisms." This is stated in the non-binding resolution "concerning the condemnation of the repression of the Iranian state against its citizens," registered on January 28 by the PP Parliamentary Group in Congress for debate in the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the text, the PP recalls that, "since December 2025, Iran has been experiencing a new wave of mass protests throughout the country, driven by an extreme economic crisis" and exacerbated by "the lack of freedoms for women and opportunities for the entire young population." “What began as a rejection of the economic situation has become a massive political mobilization against the regime,” which “has no answers to offer the Iranian people because it has focused its efforts on developing nuclear and ballistic missile programs and on providing economic and military support to its network of political allies and armed militias in the region, as well as to Russia in the war in Ukraine and to the dictatorship in Venezuela,” it continues. “Furthermore, Iranians have witnessed the government’s humiliation in the recent Israeli and American bombings, definitively shattering the image of international leadership that the ayatollahs cultivated and reinforcing the perception that the regime’s model of society is exhausted,” it warns. In this context, according to the motion, “women have once again placed themselves at the forefront of the resistance.” “They have been subjected to systematic repression for years, symbolized by the veil or chador they are forced to wear in public, which they have burned in street bonfires during these protests, recording images for dissemination abroad,” it adds. The regime’s response to these mobilizations, according to the text, has been “immediate and even more violent than on other occasions,” with “brutal repression by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Army.” The motion also denounces that “the Iranian authorities have increased the use of the death penalty as a tool of state repression and to crush dissent, intensifying its use under the pretext of national security.” “On January 20, the European Parliament strongly condemned the repression in Iran. However, the Spanish Congress of Deputies has yet to issue an institutional statement on the matter,” laments the People's Party (PP), which warns that, “given the gravity of the situation, Spain, as a state committed to democracy, freedom, and human rights, must activate its diplomatic instruments and foreign policy to contribute to the protection of the civilian population and the defense of a framework of freedoms in Iran.” Therefore, the non-binding resolution urges the Government to “demand an end to the grave human rights violations committed by the Iranian regime, as well as full respect for the fundamental freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association,” to “demand the immediate release of all persons detained for peacefully exercising their fundamental rights,” and to “expressly condemn the targeted repression against women, demand an end to discriminatory laws and practices, including the imposition of the mandatory veil, and support the struggle of Iranian women for equality, dignity, and the full exercise of their rights and freedoms.” The text also urges the government to “publicly recognize the criminal nature of the repression carried out by the Iranian regime,” to “demand the immediate suspension of the application of the death penalty, which still exists in the country,” to “promote and support independent international mechanisms for investigating and holding accountable the crimes committed,” and to “support the inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the EU List of Terrorist Organizations” (as indeed occurred at the EU Foreign Affairs Council on January 29). The People's Party also asks the government “to verify whether there are Spanish citizens affected by the repression or at risk in Iran, and, if so, to activate the necessary consular protection mechanisms,” and to promote, “within the framework of the European Union, the expansion and strengthening of sanctions against the Iranian regime.”
