Sánchez will be received in India by Modi and will meet with Indian investors and Spanish AI entrepreneurs

Eduardo González The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, begins his visit to India this Tuesday, February 17, to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the largest global summit dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to date. The Prime Minister's program will begin on Wednesday morning (early morning in Spain) with a meeting with Indian investors, a greeting to representatives of the Spain-India CEO Forum, and a meeting with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. Later, he will attend the inauguration of the Spanish-Indian mural in the Lodhi Art District of New Delhi, meet with Spanish entrepreneurs in the Artificial Intelligence sector at the residence of the Spanish Ambassador to India, and participate in the presentation of the Spanish-Indian co-production "Mudras. Weaving Invisible Threads." After appearing before the media at 5:30 p.m. (1:00 p.m. in Spain), the day will conclude with his attendance at the opening dinner of the Global Summit on the Impact of AI. On Thursday, Pedro Sánchez will attend the India-Spain Higher Education Conference, participate in the opening ceremony of the Global Summit on the Impact of AI 2026 and address the Summit plenary at noon, 7:30 in Spain. The International Summit on the Impact of AI, organized by Narendra Modi, will bring together participants from more than one hundred countries, including between 15 and 20 heads of government (such as the presidents of France and Brazil, Emmanuel Macron and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil), more than 50 ministers, and more than 40 CEOs of Indian and global technology giants, such as Google, Microsoft, and Facebook. So far, there have been more than 35,000 registrations from around the world. This is Pedro Sánchez's second trip to India in less than a year and a half. The previous visit took place at the end of October 2024 and included the signing, with Narendra Modi, of a Joint Declaration that will serve as a roadmap for the coming years in the political, economic and trade, cultural, scientific, technological, and innovation spheres, as well as in consular affairs, tourism, and relations. During that trip, Sánchez and Modi also attended the inauguration of the Airbus plant and its local partner TATA in Vadodara. The plant, which reflects India's growing demand for military equipment and Spain's interest in positioning itself as a reliable partner in that sector, will allow the production of 40 C-295 aircraft, the largest contract awarded by India in the defense sector. Sánchez's new visit to India (the first by a Spanish president to India since José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's visit in 2007) will take place just three weeks after the conclusion of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and the Asian country. This agreement is expected to boost EU exports to the Indian market by eliminating or reducing tariffs on more than 90 percent of products exported from Europe. The announcement of the agreement came five days after Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares' visit to Delhi, where he confirmed that Pedro Sánchez will travel to India next February to attend the International Summit on the Impact of AI and invited Modi to visit Spain soon. Albares also expressed his desire for the bilateral relationship to be elevated to the level of a “strategic partnership,” the highest level of relationship between two states (similar to that which Spain already has with countries such as China, Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, or Qatar), and highlighted the imminent conclusion of negotiations to finalize the Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union, which will create “the largest free trade area in the world,” which “represents a great opportunity for European companies, including Spanish ones.”
